I lived in India for a while, where I got to know a group of women from one of Chennai's slums who make unique, handmade bags. I immediately fell in love with them, so when I returned to Denmark, I had no doubts. I wanted to sell the bags in Denmark so that even more people could enjoy them. So I quit my job to concentrate on marketing and selling the bags. So now I have a life with lots of meaningful work, beautiful handmade bags of high quality and the knowledge that even more young Indian mothers and disabled people experience the pride of being able to support themselves.
The project aims to create jobs in the slums for the most vulnerable and is of course Fair Trade approved, which means that there are decent working conditions and absolutely no child labor. The children's schooling is a high priority and for every bag sold, an amount goes to a fund that ensures the children's schooling and medical and medical assistance if needed.
Seda and Seyda from Hamide.co have designed a new visual expression for us. Logo, catalog, bag tags and business cards. They are very talented and we are very happy with the result.
Janni has been working for RainTree since the fall. She has come up with lots of new ideas and input and we are now in the process of expanding the webshop with new Fair Trade products. It's really great to be 2 to discuss ideas and issues. If you know of producer groups that are Fair Trade certified and if you think they make great products, we would love to hear from you.
